Taiwan meteorological authorities Sunday issued warning of torrential rain across the island from Sunday to Wednesday as typhoon Parma was approaching.
The local observatory also forecast rainstorm and heavy rainstorm in northern, eastern and southermost Taiwan from Sunday to Monday. The observatory has warned local residents in southeastern and southern parts of Taiwan to stay away from seaside.
It was a rainy and windy Sunday morning in Taipei. The island's southernmost Hengchun Peninsula was already suffering from rainstorms and tough sea.
Partly devastated by typhoon Morakot nearly two months ago, which left nearly 700 people dead or missing, Taiwan is on high alert against the coming typhoon Parma.
Troops had been dispatched to areas likely to be badly hit. Local government of Taipei had prepared around 25,000 bags of sand and earth to keep water off local residences. Evacuation of people living in some mountainous areas began Saturday.
The island's rescue authorities have prepared 70 helicopters and more than 100 ships for disaster relief operations.
