Tropical Cyclone Patricia is weakening and will disappear in the next 24 to 48 hours after striking the western Mexican resort city of Los Cabos in the state of Baja California Sur (BCS), the state-run National Meteorological Service (SMN) said on Wednesday.
The cyclone was formed 25 kilometers south of San Jose del Cabo in BCS state and is heading west-northwest at a speed of 9 kilometers per hour (kph), the SMN said in a statement.
The storm is now traveling through stable dry air and across cooler surfaces which rob it of energy.
The SMN repeated warnings to ships off Mexico's Pacific coast which could face greater risk due to heavy rain, strong winds and choppy seas.
Newspapers reported that schools and colleges that had closed ahead of the storm in Los Cabos and BCS capital La Paz reopened early on Wednesday.
