The 47,000 tonne container vessel "Rena" hit a reef about 22 kilometres off the coast of Tauranga, New Zealand on Oct. 5 and leaked about 350 tonnes of heavy fuel oil, much of which washed up on local beaches.

The oil leaking from a grounded cargo ship off the New Zealand coast is the country's worst environmental disaster in decades, local official says.
