A tank car overturned and leaked cinnamene into the Hanjiang river in northwest China's Shaanxi Province early Sunday, local authorities told Xinhua.

The accident happened at 3 a.m. Sunday on a highway in Ningqiang County in Shaanxi, leaving the driver and another person in the vehicle slightly injured and some of the cinnamene leaked into the river, an official from Ningqiang County's government said.

Three cofferdams were set up by the county's government to minimize the pollution in the downstream of the Hanjiang River. Downstream residents had been evacuated and told not to drink the water in the river, the official said.

Investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
