Ershun and Damao, the pandas, will be accompanied by animal protection experts during the flight, and fresh bamboo will be sent to them regularly after they settle down there, FedEx, which has been commissioned for the trip, announced on Monday.

The two pandas will both stay in the Toronto Zoo and the Calgary Zoo for five years, respectively.

The Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens signed the agreement with the two Canadian zoos in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality in February 2012, during Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's visit to the municipality.

Harper had claimed that "they will be the first pair of pandas to visit Canada since the 1980s."

China is currently home to more than 1,600 wild pandas, and the number of captive-bred pandas stands at more than 300, according to the State Forestry Administration.
