Major damage has been reported from the Maldivan capital Male and Atolls due to the relentless monsoon rain, strong winds and rough seas, local media reports said on Wednesday.
State Defence Minister Mohamed Ahmed told local media that reports of damage to agricultural lands and houses due to flooding have been coming in from the islands.
Shaviyani Atoll Maaungoodhoo was worst hit by the heavy showers on Tuesday evening, as the island reported damages to 105 houses as a result of flooding.
Ahmed said some islands of Meemu Atoll, Dhaalu Atoll and Vaavu Atoll had reported damage by the rain. Meanwhile, flooding in Gaafu Alifu Atoll Villingili had damaged the island's sewerage system.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has urged caution when traveling by sea and to ensure all communication equipment are in working order before venturing out to sea.
Police have also urged people to be more cautious while driving and take preventive measures to protect expensive household items and equipment against flooding.
The Maldives Meteorological Department said heavy showers and strong winds are expected in the next 24 hours.
