New measures to reduce PM2.5 pollution

Shanghai plans a raft of new measures to improve the city's air quality to the World Health Organization standard's for PM2.5 pollutants within 10 years, said Zhang Quan, director of the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau.
The measures include banning outdoor barbecue businesses, regulating vehicle maintenance, promoting electric vehicles and eliminating coal boilers.
The new Air Quality Protection Regulation is expected to be released before September, Zhang said. It will include detailed stipulations on energy, industry, traffic, construction, agriculture and social life to curb air pollution.
"With these measures, the city's air quality is expected to reach the standard of the World Health Organization for PM2.5 pollutants within 10 years," Zhang told a forum yesterday. All barbecue businesses will be forbidden across the city as the smoke from burning coal increase the density of PM2.5, or airborne particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, Zhang said.
The government also plans to promote efficient kitchen range hoods in restaurants and homes.
