Cuba's National Civil Defense on Wednesday issued a flood warning for a number of western provinces due to heavy rainfall.
The western part of Cuba has been hit by continuous rains over the past few days, with heavy downpours particularly in the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Havana, Mayabeque and the Isle of Youth, according to a special notice from the Forecast Center of the National Meteorology Institute.
In Pinar del Rio, more than 1,000 people have been evacuated. Local officials called for preventive measures to protect the residents from possible flooding and mudslides, as a more inclement weather was predicted for at least next 48 hours.
The Civil Defense said local governments and residents of the rain-hit regions should stay alert to forecasts, urging them to take "timely and reasonable measures to protect life and property."
The heavy rainfall in western Cuba was caused by a broad low-pressure system located over the southeastern part of the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Meteorology Institute.
