Shen Yueyue, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, on Thursday called for efforts to promote ecological progress in urban and rural planning.

The importance of protecting the environment and coping with environmental pollution must be respected, Shen said while addressing a symposium organized by the Environmental Protection and Resources Conservation Committee of the 12th NPC.

Shen said related laws should be of high quality and they must respond to concerns from society.

She urged the committee to draft related bills that will contribute to ecological progress, as well as ensure that existing laws are implemented as part of urban and rural development plans.

Promoting ecological progress was highlighted in a report delivered to the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) held in November 2012.
