OIC states coordinate efforts to tackle climate change

The environment ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will meet in Morocco on Oct. 8-9 in order to coordinate their participation in the United Nations Conference on Climate Change to be held in Paris in December.

Themed "Climate Change: Future Challenges for Sustainable Development," the sixth session of the Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers will examine a draft document on Environment Governance for Environment Sustainability in the Islamic World.

In addition, several reference documents aimed at developing joint Islamic environmental action at the level of OIC member states, the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) said in a statement on Saturday.

The participants will also review the progress made towards the establishment of Islamic Academy for the Environment and Sustainable Development, and on Project for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Award for Environment Management in the Islamic World.

The conference, which brings together representatives of the international and regional organizations concerned, is co-organized by ISESCO and the General Presidency of Meteorology and Environment Protection (PME) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in coordination with the OIC General Secretariat.

The conference held its first session in June 2002, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, during which a founding document entitled Jeddah Commitments on Sustainable Development was adopted, laying the foundation for joint Islamic action in the field of the environment.
