More than 5,000 passengers have been stranded after heavy fog shrouded the airport in Urumqi, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on Friday morning.
As of 10:30 a.m., 52 outbound flights from Urumqi International Airport were postponed and six inbound ones were rearranged to land in Kashgar in southern Xinjiang and Lanzhou in Gansu Province.
Visibility at the airport has been reduced to 500 meters in the morning, though it is forecast to improve after midday.
Only 10 flights had taken off from the airport by 9 a.m. and four were canceled. The airport has 209 scheduled outbound flights on Friday.
Airport authorities have activated an emergency response to the disruption.
