Mexico's National Meteorological Service (SMN) on Thursday upgraded Hurricane Sandra to category 4 on the five-level Saffir Simpson scale and advised citizens living on Mexico's Pacific coast to take care.

Sandra is currently centered about 810 km southwest of Cabo Corrientes in the western state of Jalisco and 470 km southwest of Socorro Island in the western state of Colima.

It is accompanied by maximum sustained winds of 230 km per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 280 kph and is set to cause heavy rains in some states such as Jalisco, Colima and Michoacan, the SMN said in a report, adding that Sandra is moving north at a rate of 19 kph.

Authorities have advised people living in the area to follow local news and weather forecasts as the hurricane may cause flooding, landslides, mudslides and overflowing rivers.
