The national observatory on Tuesday issued a yellow alert for an incoming cold front that will effect most parts of the country.

Temperatures in northwest China and areas south of the Yangtze River will fall by at least 6 degrees Celsius over the next three days, accompanied by strong winds, said the National Meteorological Center (NMC) in a statement on its website.

Parts of northwestern and northern regions will see snow or sleet on Tuesday and Wednesday. Moderate to heavy snow will hit parts of Gansu, Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces, the NMC said.

However, starting from Thursday, temperatures in the country's northern regions will rise steadily as the cold front moves south, the NMC said. Temperatures in south China will rebound over the weekend.

China has a four-tier warning system for severe weather, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
