CPPCC Session Ends

The First Session of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) ended in Beijing Friday morning, after fulfilling all the set tasks including electing a new leadership.

Members at the closing meeting adopted a political resolution, and accepted a report on the work of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC 9th National Committee and a report by the Proposals Sub-Committee on the examination of proposals.

Newly-elected Chairman Jia Qinglin, who described the session as a success, called on the members to build up a strong sense of mission and responsibility and work hard to contribute to building a well-off society in an all-round way in China.

In the new century, Jia said, it is "our solemn mission" to fulfill the three important goals of promoting modernization, realizing the reunification of the motherland and maintaining world peace and promoting common development.

"The key to success is to seize the important strategic period of the first 20 years of this century to work for the building of a well-off society in an all-round way," the CPPCC chairman said.

He stressed that the CPPCC is an organization of the patriotic united front of the Chinese people and an important institution for the multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The CPPCC should give full play to its role in political consultation, democratic supervision and participation in the deliberation and administration of state affairs.

The CPPCC should concentrate on the two major themes of unity and democracy, strive to create a sound social and political environment for building a well-off society in an all-round way, put emphasis on maintaining unity and stability, carry forward socialist democracy, perform its functions in a systematized, standardized and institutionalized manner, and strengthen ties with personages overseas to promote the reunification of the motherland, Jia said.

Top CPC and state leaders including Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao attended the closing meeting, after which they had a picture taken with the CPPCC members.
