On October 25, Liu Guotian, a shadow play artist from Dingxi, Gansu performed leather silhouette show in a village in An’ding district. Numbers of local people came to watch on hearing this. Shadow play, also called shadow picture or puppet shadow show, is a story-telling folk drama with its paper-cut silhouette made of animal hide or hard paper against light. The players, hiding behind the white screen in the course of the show, manipulated the figure with hands and sing a story with locally popular tunes accompanied by percussion and stringed instrument music. In 2014, shadow play was listed among the fourth group of representative items of state-level intangible cultural heritage.
