Obama widens US sanctions on N Korea
The US broadened financial sanctions on North Korea Monday, Reuters reported. President Barack Obama signed an executive order to freeze the US assets of four North Korean citizens and eight firms in part to punish it for the sinking of a South Korean warship. Those North Korean entities trade in conventional arms or luxury products, counterfeit currency or engage in money laundering, drug smuggling or other "illicit" activities.
At least 18 die during mushroom hunts 18
At least 18 mushroom-lovers have died in accidents while hunting for their favorite fungi in the mountains and forests of northern Italy, Reuters reported. Japan football coach no farmer
Japan's coach Takeshi Okada says he has been declining offers to become a farmer, AFP reported. The mix-up is all because of a mistranslation in his interview with a major British football magazine. Okada recalled he had told the magazine before the World Cup in South Africa that he would leave his job to lead a life typified by a Japanese idiom which means "till the land when it shines and read books when it rains." The lifestyle has been idealized by intellectual recluses, but the idiom itself has been expanded to mean a life free from worldly affairs. The magazine quoted Okada as saying he would retire to become a "farmer." As a result, he had received agricultural job offers from a banana plant in the sub-tropical island of Okinawa and the mayor of a town on the northern island of Hokkaido, Okada said. Okada's contract as Japan coach expires on August 31. His replacement is yet to be hired.
