Protestors block bank with bricks
59-year-old property developer Cameron Hope protested the lack of available credit for small firms by constructing a brick wall that blocked the front door of a Barclays bank branch, the Daily Mail reported. Hope and other protesters built an 8-by-4-foot wall of breeze blocks outside the entrance of Barclays in Bournemouth, Dorset. He was joined by other local business owners who have had trouble getting loans. They plastered the wall with placards proclaiming "Robbed by the banks we own," and "Make the banks lend." The wall was taken down two hours into the protest after police threatened to arrest the demonstrators.
Hitler's art to be auctioned
A recently discovered collection of paintings by Adolf Hitler could fetch more than 150,000 pounds when they're auctioned on Sept. 30, the Daily Telegraph reported. The paintings were completed around 1908 when he was simply a struggling artist. Hitler painted night landscapes for tourists to try to earn money. A Vienna art academy twice rejected his applications. Supposedly, he simply wasn't good enough, particularly when drawing people, where the perspective was all wrong.
Sculpture gives the finger
A marble sculpture of a cut-off hand with the middle finger extended has gone on display in front of the Milan Stock Exchange, Reuters reported. The 11-meter-high installation, called "L.O.V.E." and unveiled for the first time in Milan, is part of a retrospective dedicated to the Italian contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan, whose provocative works include a sculpture of Pope John Paul being hit by a meteorite. The installation has fueled criticism among local politicians and intellectuals over the rights and wrongs of showing a provocative work in a public space. The sculpture will remain on display until Oct. 3.
Annoying cell phone conversations
Hearing just one side of the conversation is much more distracting than hearing both sides and it erodes your attention from other tasks, according to an article in US News & World Report. Your brain tends to ignore predictable things, but pays more attention to the unpredictable. One side of a phone conversation is quite unpredictable, and that's why it's hard to shut out. Talking on a cell phone in public has a really profound effect on the cognition of people around you, and it's not because they're eavesdropping or they're bad people. Their cognitive mechanism basically means that they're forced to listen.
Magnet can change hand preference
A new study suggests that placing a magnet on your head can temporarily turn you from a right-handed to a left-handed person, the Daily Mail reported. The magnet generates a magnetic field on a small part of the skull which creates weak electrical currents in the brain. The currents interfere with nearby brain cells and prevent them from firing normally. The effects lasted only while the magnet was switched on and appears to have caused no lasting change.
