Britons in China (I): Robert Glover

         (Robert Glover)

"China has much to offer the world, it is whether the world is ready to hear her. I often use that saying 'don't throw the baby out with the bath water' as China embraces the west and its values."
Robert Glover first came to China in 1996 on a research visit and saw quickly that rather than looking at problems it was the solutions to the problems that were the better approach. With twenty years experience as a UK social worker he saw how he might be able to use his professional training to support disadvantaged children, in particular orphaned and abandoned children.
In 1998 he founded "Care for Children" and moved to Shanghai with his wife, Elizabeth, and their six children, to work in partnership with the Shanghai Civil Affairs on a family placement project. Funded by the Department for International Development, 500-orphaned children were placed from the institution into local Shanghai families in the first model of best practice in China.
In 2001 Robert was awarded the White Magnolia award from the Shanghai Government, presented by the Vice Mayor of Shanghai Zhou Yupeng for outstanding services to the City of Shanghai.
Following an invitation form the Ministry of Civil Affairs, he and his family moved to Beijing in 2003 to work in partnership with a national project throughout China with projects now in 28 provinces and training nearly 300 social welfare institutes. A vision for "one million children" was born.
"In helping to set up a professional family placement programme in China it is important that we work strategically. We want to develop a sustainable approach, which embraces senior government policy makers while training at grass root level. This then empowers the local staff to transform children's lives. We have been told that an estimated 250,000 children have now been placed into families."
In 2005 Robert was awarded the OBE from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for his work for Care for Children. 2005
Robert is a Christian and believes that the family is vital not only to the positive development of children lives but also to society as a whole. On most Saturday evenings in China, Robert tunes into Radio Norfolk to hear how Norwich City is fairing.
