Girls who reach puberty early are more likely to suffer mental health problems in their teenage years because of conflicts with parents and boyfriends, according to a University of Bristol and University of Cambridge study, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Lead researcher Dr. Carol Joinson said the study found girls who mature early are more vulnerable to developing depressive symptoms by the time they reach their mid-teens. She said the transition into puberty is a critical period, associated with many biological, cognitive and social changes, and these can include increased conflict with parents, the development of romantic relationships, changes in body image and fluctuating hormone levels. These changes may have a more negative impact on girls who mature at an earlier age. Joinson adds that the girls may face demands that they are not emotionally prepared for.
