Award-winning Australian neurosurgeon Charlie Teo, 53, sparked a furious debate after offering people the chance to watch him perform brain surgery, the Daily Mail reported.
Andrew Penman, chief executive of the Cancer Council of New South Wales, said that the council had auctioned the chance to watch Teo operate four times in the past two years, in order to raise research funds.
But John Quinn of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons said he was opposed to selling seats to spectators, saying "We are not in favor of non-medical people in an operating room just for the sake of viewing. Non-medical people would also not be bound by the codes of conduct that apply to doctors and nurses."
Dr Teo was awarded the Order of Australia last week.
