Tomb sweeping: colossal waste of paper

More than 1,000 tons of paper money are burned each year during the annual tomb-sweeping festival, Chongqing Evening News reports, citing the China Consumers' Association. The massive quantity of paper cost as much as 10 billion yuan.
The festival occurs two weeks after vernal equinox. It's believed the spirits of deceased ancestors look after the family and sacrifices of food and "spirit" money are made to keep them happy.
