Newspaper pictures that come alive in the fictional world of Harry Potter will soon be a reality thanks to ground-breaking British technology, the Daily Mail reports.

Software company Autonomy has developed a vision recognition system for smartphones and tablet computers that embeds pictures and videos on top of real-life objects.

It takes one step further than Google Goggles, where users can find search information on a building or object after taking a picture of it.

For example, pointing the latest iPhone running the app at a poster of the animated film "Despicable Me" could cause the app to play a trailer of the movie and also send 3D characters jumping into the landscape.

The company can even duplicate the effect from the Harry Potter films by finding and playing video of an event captured in a newspaper photograph. Pointing your phone at a sports page could replay goals from the previous night's football match.
