Close-up magicians battle in Beijing

Four of the world's greatest close-up magicians will gather soon for some amazing entertainment. They're putting on a battle of magic for the fans here in China. Entitled "An Unspoken Secret", the event organizers recently held a press conference in Beijing, and even revealed a few tricks.

The magician is only two meters away from the cameras, but the people watching still can't crack the code. No fancy stage design or dramatic plot to fool everyone in the theatre, the close-up magicians stay right next to their audience and entertain them with simple trinkets such as cards and coins.

Mark Oberon said, "Because the camera is on you..."

The headlining acts include multi-international competition winner David Williamson from the US; UK trickster Mark Oberon, who visited China once in 2009 and won the top award in the "Beijing World Magic Competition"; Miguel Puga, a Spanish entertainer who blends piano playing into his performances; and Ponta the Smith, a young Japanese magician who specializes in coin tricks.

Lin Jian, an art director said, "Chinese close-up magicians still need to improve a lot to catch up with the international scene. Inviting international big names to China will provide an opportunity for them to learn from the best of the industry."

This is the third year for the close-up magic show to take place in China. The tour will kick off in Beijing's Poly Theatre in July. It then heads to other cities including Hohhot, Qingdao and Shenzhen.
