A restaurant in Guangzhou City recently posted a notice warning against non-customer use of its bathrooms, the Information Times reported. Anyone who is caught using the facilities but not currently dining at the restaurant faces a penalty of cleaning the toilets for a full day, the notice said.
The manager of the restaurant explained that they instituted the penalty because many customers and staff from the adjacent shopping mall have been clogging up the restaurant bathroom, leading to crowding and extra work for the cleaning staff.
A lawyer pointed out that such penalties are in breach of regulations that public places such as hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls shall open their toilets to the public during business hours.
After learning the legal implications, the restaurant's manager took down the notice.

So far, no one has been given the penalty, the restaurant said.
