The US Library of Congress announced 25 films chosen this year to be included in the National Film Registry. Among them, the beloved "Forrest Gump" is set to be immortalized among the nation's treasures in the world's largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings.

The Library of Congress on Wednesday announced that 1994's smash hit "Forrest Gump," starring Tom Hanks, was one of 25 films chosen to be added this year to the National Film Registry.

"Forrest Gump," winner of 6 Academy Awards including best picture, is the most contemporary entry on this year's list. It tells the story of a simple man who ends up finding his way into some of the most iconic events of the 1960s and 1970s. Sally Field, who plays Forrest Gump's mother in the movie, also stars in another of the films on the list, 1979's "Norma Rae".

Other movies that made the final cut include Charlie Chaplin's silent-era feature "The Kid" from 1921, the Disney 1942 animated Classic "Bambi" and 1991's violent psychological thriller "The Silence of the Lambs."

Each year the Congress names 25 films that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. This year 2,228 films were nominated. And according to Librarian of Congress James H. Billington, these films were selected because of their enduring significance to American culture.
