Miyun Reservoir, on the upper reaches of the Chaobai River, is not only the biggest one in northeast China, but also crucial to the capital's water supply.
The king fish festival this year includes more than 10 different activities such as a fishing fair and a mountain climbing contest around the reservoir. The money from selling the top three fish will go to the Beijing Water Sources Protection Fund and poor students living near the reservoir and Baihe River. To mark 50 years of the reservoir's existence, a grand photo exhibition will be held showing its construction and development.
Besides the reservoir fish festival, Miyun is also promoting other attractions in the county such as the Heilongtan Pool and a waterfall that is said to be the biggest in Beijing. The Heilongtan Pool is located in a 4-km-long gorge where the water level reaches more than 220 meters. The narrow gorge snakes its way through three pools and 18 waterfalls, of which the largest is 62.5 meters high.
Now is also the time to taste chestnuts in Miyun. Renowned for producing the best chestnut in China, Miyun has numerous chestnut gardens.
