Kofi Annan, the joint special envoy of the United Nations and League of Arab States, will visit China from March 27 to March 28, 2012 and exchange views with China on Syrian issue. The political situation of Syria is now at a crossroad and the mediation by Annan will make it hopeful for Syria to solve crisis peacefully. Once the turbulent political situation of Syria realizes "soft landing," the Middle East will undoubtedly create a new model of political transition.

The upheavals of the Middle East were originally a spontaneous, legitimate protest activity striving for democracy, freedom and development. However, drastic political transition especially the selective military intervention by the Western countries is increasingly making the "changes" into "chaos" in the Middle East. The "spring of Arab" is gradually developing into the "autumn of Arab" and even the "winter of Arab."

In this case, the original political passion of people in the Middle East was gradually displaced by a mentality of seeking stability and fear of chaos. They no longer believe that everything will be ok as long as the current regime is overthrown, but hope to solve the existing problems through top-down and gradual reformation.

Syria is located in the heart of the Arab world and its political situation decides whether the political situation of Middle East is stable or not. Once the current regime of Syria is forcibly overthrown, it is likely to provoke a catastrophic chaos. Therefore, creating the new model of political transition to solve Syria crisis has become an imperative task, which means to make the top-down reform meanwhile reserving those in power. Due to the local characteristics of Syrian politics and the complexity of political operation, the independent and gradual political transformation of Syria model will have positive significance to the politics of Syria, the Middle East and even the world.

There are also external conditions for the birth of Syria model. At present, the forces of peace exceeded that of war for the first time in terms of Syrian issue. The firm attitudes of China and Russia drastically changed previous situation of leaning to one side. On March 21, 2012, the UN Security Council unanimously approved the presidential statements to support the political solution of Syrian issue by Annan. On March 23, the EU Council of Foreign Ministers expanded sanctions against Syria and at the same time expressed their support for the mediation by Annan and called for the reactionaries of Syria to launch the integration mechanism under the leadership of the League of Arab States. It indicates that Western countries not only continue to intervene in the Syrian political situation but also plan for the "cold treatment" and cooling, which provided time and space for Annan's mediation in Syria.

Of course, the road for the political situation of Syria to realize the "soft landing" is still rough and bumpy and the possibility of a failed mediation by Annan cannot be excluded. Preparing for the worst and doing one's best are the due attitude of peace-loving political forces.
