Construction of the 220KV power transmission and transformation project that goes through the Taklimakan Desert started today. Once the project is finished, it will provide power for oil and gas sources and solve electrical problems for the southern part of the desert. The power line originates in Luntai County, located in the north of the desert, and will extend all the way to the Tazhong Oilfield, totaling 322 kilometers in length and costing 1.012 billion yuan. The Taklimakan Desert is the largest desert in China. The Luntai-Tazhong-Qiemo power transmission and transformation project will be the world's longest 220KV power transmission and transformation line. [Xinhua]
