African Guangzhou drifters' Chinese Dream

Editor's Notes:There are more than 20,000 Africans permanently residing in Guangzhou who cherish the Chinese Dream and strive to make the city more colorful.

Chairman of the Nigerian community Emma Ojoku sits in his office on March 21, 2013. Ojoku likes to wear traditional Nigerian dress at the office, where a Chinese flag and a Nigerian flag are standing side by side. Sixteen years ago, he came to Guangzhou with all his savings, and now he is married to a Chinese woman and has a son. He established a Nigerian community to create better cooperation with Chinese people and act as a "bridge" between China and Africa. A study from the City Management Center under Guangzhou Academy of Social Sciences shows there are more than 20,000 Africans permanently residing in Guangzhou (for over six months per year). They are living among the Cantonese, shop locally, take public transportation, and so on. The dream of these African Guangzhou drifters is simple: Earn money, get married and settle here. This dream looks brilliant, but in reality remains difficult to achieve. Some people say that these Africans are no different from Chinese migrant workers -- both leave their native place, get a taste of life's bitterness, cherish their dreams and basically build the city where they are living.
