Editor's note: Admiral Mark Ferguson, vice chief of Naval Operations in the U.S. navy visited the headquarters of the Chinese navy's East China Sea Fleet in Ningbo in east China on Nov. 13, 2013.
A U.S. navy delegation visited the new guided-missile destroyer Changchun, Type 056 corvette Shangrao, and the new air-independent propulsion (AIP) submarine 333. They also observed crew training, instruction, communication and arms in the Shangrao Corvette, the first time in four years U.S. navy officers were at sea in a Chinese warship.
Vice Admiral Su Zhiqian, commander of the East China Sea Fleet praised the importance of Ferguson's visit in establishing a new type of relationship between the two navies. He said that both sides have held open and candid exchanges in various levels in recent years. He said that he hoped the two navies can further enhance intelligence sharing, mutual support in emergencies and establish a hot line between their fleets to reduce suspicion and misjudgments. He also expressed his expectations for the upcoming naval exercises in the Pacific Rim in 2014, which sailors from East China Sea Fleet will participate in.
Admiral Ferguson spoke highly of the Chinese navy's confidence, staff quality and equipment. He will make great efforts to promote bilateral friendship and cooperation and maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific Region.
