At least six people were killed and more than 50 others injured as several compartments of an express train derailed in the western Indian state of Maharashtra on Friday, a senior railway official said.

"The mishap took place near Ghoti between Igatpuri and Nasik stations in the state at 6 a.m. (local time). The Mangala Express was travelling to Ernakulam in the southern state of Kerala from the Indian capital," he said on condition of anonymity.
