Hong Kong media mogul and philanthropist Sir Run Run Shaw died Tuesday morning at 8:39 at home. He was 107. Shaw donated tens of billions of yuan for educational and medical facilities in both the mainland and Hong Kong. Thanks to his donations, many cities in China feature a Shaw building, such as a Shaw Teaching Complex, Shaw Library, Shaw Middle School or Shaw Gymnasium. Many of the students who have enjoyed such facilities have been inspired by the names of the buildings to find out more about Shaw. In 1985, Shaw started to fund education in the Chinese mainland. Teaching buildings with names such as "Run Run Shaw Teaching Complex," "Shaw Building" or "Yifu Building" can be seen across the country. Statistics show that Shaw's donations have totaled 2.5 billion yuan (US$406.5 million), and went to more than 3,000 projects, more than 80 percent of which were to build educational facilities. Shaw also made massive donations in Britain, the United States, Singapore and Hong Kong, totaling more than three billion yuan (US$487.8 million). Shaw's philanthropic acts earned him the title "Top Educational Philanthropist in the World." This photo shows Shaw buildings in Fudan University, Shanghai.
