Crescent Lake is a popular tourist destination located in an oasis in Dunhuang, Gansu Province. The lake is 100-meters-long from north to south and 25-meters-wide from east to west, with a depth of 5 meters. In 1999, the water level started to decline. In 2001, the local government built two reservoirs nearby and drew more than 6 million cubic meters of water each year to fill up the lake and restore its depth.
