A few miles into Fengjie County, on the northern bank of the Yangtze River is Baidi City (White Emperor City), also called Baidi Temple. It is located on Baidi Mountain at the mouth of Qutang Gorge, one of the Three Gorgers of the Yangtze River. In 1946, Dmitri Kessel, a staff photographer on Life magazine, arrived in the Three Gorges area and took series of photos using his box camera to document the scenery, local people and customs. However, the photos were not published at the same year. Until in June, 1956, they were open to the public. [Photo/Dmitri Kessel] |
