Editor's note: August 22, 2014 marks the 110th birthday of the late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping. A group of rare old photos, published by Chinanews.com, records Deng's life and work in the period spanning from 1937 to 1949.

This photo was taken in August 1937 when the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army (1927-1937) was reorganized as the Eighth Route Army, led by the Communist Party of China during the War of Resistance against Japan (1937-1945). In the photo are Chinese military commanders Zhu Deng, Liu Bocheng, Deng Xiaoping (second from the left), Nie Rongzhen and Luo Ruiqing. [Photo/Chinanews.com]
