Editor's note: Photos of fans wearing Han Chinese costumes in the Xi'an subway have gone viral recently. The Hanfu or Han Chinese costume is traditional Han Chinese clothing. It has a history of three millennia and is characterized by long, loose sleeves and crossed collars with the right crossing over the left. After the ethnic Manchu defeated the imperial court ruled by Han people in the 17th Century, Hanfu was gradually replaced by Manchurian style clothing —Qipao or cheongsam. Hanfu includes garments, hats (for men), and hairpieces (for women). It is now worn during some festivals, rites, or religious ceremonies by hobbyists, historical re-enactors, Taoist, Confucian followers, or Buddhist monks.
