Editor's note: Steamed buns with colorful patterns are a traditional Chinese staple food typically enjoyed during joyous festivals, weddings and birthday parties. In many rural areas, people also use the food as a sacrificial offering to their ancestors during memorial ceremonies. The food is also called an "edible folk art" as the cutting and kneading processes are intricate and vivid, with the designs covering a wide range of people, animals, flowers, fruits, vegetables, and Chinese characters. In the following pictures, the colorful steamed buns were designed and made by villagers in the Guanzhong area of northwest China's Shaanxi Province in the name of a peaceful, happy and prosperous life.
