Editor's note: The Western festival of Valentine's Day is widely celebrated in China nowadays, especially in big cities like Beijing where a lot of commercial events are held. Many Chinese people have adopted the tradition from the West to celebrate this romantic occasion by exchanging gifts of flowers and chocolates for the ladies, and ties and scarves for the men, or making a special date to have a dinner party or go to the movies. Some couples even choose to register a marriage if February 14 is a working day. The sale of flowers is particularly brisk on this day, and couriers can be seen shuttling back and forth on the streets and lanes with bouquets of flowers in their hands on behalf of their customers.

Flower business is particularly brisk in Beijing on Valentine's Day falling on Feb. 14. According to this flower shop owner, one rose costs eight yuan (about US$1.2) on this special occasion, five yuan (about US$0.8) more than the normal cost. [Photo by Li Jingrong/China.org.cn]
