Editor's note: Artworks made with roots are usually for landscaping or decorating gardens. An effort to reshape natural splendor, the works are made by recycling dead tree roots and are a rather original concept. Yu Chunwang, a 63-year-old man from Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, has been engaged in root artworks for more than 10 years. He has produced a seemingly countless number of works, chiseled and carved with delicate touches, covering various subjects such as birds, beasts, hills and forests. He has said that root artworks are made based on their original shapes and the main process includes bark removal, carving, polishing, oil spraying and painting. He taught himself to be a root craftsman with continual practice. After completing a work, he likes to compose an impromptu poem to express his love for both art and life.
