Editor's note: The annual Dog Meat Festival soon to be held in Yulin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, has met increasing opposition from home and abroad in recent years. Locals believe that dog meat is no different from pork and that they should thus be free to enjoy their tradition without criticism, while protesters are concerned about animal cruelty and the health risks of eating dogs. Animal rights activists are calling for an end to this tradition and pressing for the festival to be banned. In the following pictures, dog-lovers from Pingliang, Gansu Province, voice their opinions and heartfelt wishes for the well-being of dogs.
