Editor's note: A traditional handicraft and talent show was recently held in Jianhe County of southwest China's Guizhou Province where it is mainly distributed by the people of the Dong and Miao ethnic groups. The great variety of beautiful handicraft articles and excellent skills displayed at the event were a feast for the eyes, including local paintings, silver ornament making, paper-cutting, straw sandal weaving, bamboo carving and silk dyeing. The talent show also includes local musical instrument playing, operas, folk songs and martial arts. A total of 56 items involving local folk arts have been included in the national, provincial or Jianhe prefecture-level intangible cultural heritage lists. Local governments regularly hold these kinds of talent shows and related training classes so that local handicrafts and traditions can be better protected and passed on from generation to generation.
