Editor's note: A chain store of Xiamen International Book Company Ltd (XIBC) operated inside an over-100-year-old villa on Gulang Islet, Fujian Province, offers a unique reading experience for readers. A good number of prominent authors, such as Bei Dao and Shu Ting, have visited the store. The assets of the house are valued at no less than 100 million yuan (US$14.5 million).

Located on No. 21 Zhonghua Road, Gulang Islet, Fujian Province, a villa-turned-bookstore has provided readers and visitors with a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of the touristic island. The latest transformation has led the villa, with an estimated value of over 100 million yuan, to give up its lucrative land-property transactions and make room for XIBC to launch books.
