Editor's note: San Miguel de Allende is a small Mexican city that lies among the mountains of Guanajuato state. It features an extremely well-preserved city center that dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. San Miguel, as it's referred to colloquially, is a popular tourist destination and has a large expat community.
