Editor's note: Chinese customs in Nanjing, capital city of east China's Jiangsu Province, have smashed four smuggling groups in Donghai County in the province's northeast this year. The total worth of the illegal crystals seized reached 267 million yuan (US$40.25 million).

Home to more than 3,000 crystal-processing workshops, Donghai County is the largest crystal trading market in China. Nearly 10,000 local residents are engaged in crystal import and processing businesses.

Nanjing customs launched a special campaign to crack down on smuggling activities on January 5 after receiving tip-offs that the price of crystals declared by some local importers to customs was much lower than their real worth.
