Editor's Note: Mexico City's Metropolitan Cathedral is situated in the very heart of Mexico City, at the northern edge of the city's central square, or Zócalo. The cathedral took over two centuries to build and was consecrated in 1656. It purposefully was built near the site of the Aztecan Templo Mayor to serve as a symbol of Spanish domination over the indigenous population.
