African student Kabey Heritier Lweny practises singing a Chinese song before a volunteer performance for residents of a local community in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, Aug. 29, 2018. Kabey, who comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, came to Guangdong University of Technology as a Chinese language major about a year ago. The rich Chinese cuisine and culture have always appealed to him, but it's by taking part in various volunteer activities that has made him embrace the life in Guangzhou ever more closely. "I grew to learn more about the Chinese traditions and lifestyles as I joined Chinese volunteers in their community services," said Kabey. To him, volunteering offers a more direct way to feel what China is like, while the university only teaches vocabulary and grammar. In Guangzhou's Dengfeng community alone, over 30 foreign expats have registered as volunteers in the past three years. According to Kabey, volunteer activities can serve as effective platforms to help young Africans who are keen to know China better. [Photo / Xinhua]
