From a a stretch of waste land 55 years ago to a national forest park, the Saihanba region now covers about 93,000 hectares of greenery through decades of afforestation efforts which have turned it into an important ecological shield for Beijing and Tianjin. On Dec. 5, 2017, the Saihanba National Forest Park won the honor of Champions of the Earth, the highest environmental honor provided by the United Nations Environment Programme, due to its efforts in transforming waste land into a lush green paradise.
