Shilin Gorge (“Stone Forest Gorge”) lies in Diaowo village, Pinggu district, about 100 km east of Beijing city proper.

A backyard garden and summer retreat for residents of Beijing and nearby areas, the scenic spot boasts a wide range of natural features such as stone pillars, deep gorges, towering cliffs, gigantic rocks and grand waterfalls.

The gorge is famous for its breathtaking glass platform, dubbed Beijing’s “flying saucer” — a circle of glass and metal jutting out over a 1,300-foot drop. The materials used to construct the platform are the same as those used to make aircrafts, which makes the viewing area both safe and light. The platform offers an amazing bird's eye view of the gorge and lush greenery below.

There are numerous resort villages and farmhouse restaurants near Shilin Gorge, where visitors can enjoy local dishes after appreciating the gorge.

In addition, the scenic area recently announced that medical staff in China can visit the gorge for free.

How to get there:

Take the No. 852 or No. 918 bus from Dongzhimen, a public transport hub in downtown Beijing, and get off at the final station, Pinggu Bus Station. Next, transfer to the No. 25 bus and get off at Shilin Gorge station. The trip takes around two hours.

You can also take a taxi from central Beijing, with the journey to Shilin Gorge taking around one and a half hours.

For more information, you can also contact the scenic area directly by phone: 8610-60987678.
