Senior citizens go viral on Douyin

A video of senior citizens imitating characters in famous paintings has gone viral on short-video platform Douyin.

In the videos, the 10 seniors, who reside in the Shanghai Yangpu Community Nursing Home, dressed up and posed as characters in paintings such asGirl with a Pearl Earring andThe Scream. A professional photographer who was invited by the nursing home helped take the photos.

"We have seen a lot of interesting content on Douyin, but it seems that it is little high-quality content related to the elderly," said Qiao Yihao, director of the Yangpu Community Nursing Home.

"Since many of the elderly in our nursing home are very expressive and creative, we hoped to showcase their life in the form of short videos and change stereotypes of the elderly in nursing homes."

Qiao added that many residents of the nursing home know how to use Douyin and have been recording videos of themselves dancing and singing.
