Ranking among the most important festivals in China, Chinese New Year boasts a variety of customs and traditions, including making tasty and attractive snacks. For example, people in some parts of the country make traditional niangao, or glutinous rice cake, to bring good luck for the new year, as the word "niangao" sounds like the phrase "getting higher year by year" in Chinese.
